Every Thursday – Meet at NMVC before 8 AM to form carpools to drive to the trailheads.  Bring water and snacks/lunch.  We may stop to eat after the hike.

Please email  Dave at dfrench64@cox.net if you have questions or want to sign up for the hike.

Feb 1 Black Canyon Trail, Rock Springs

Billie will lead this hike. This will be an in and out hike of 4-6 miles round trip. We will hike down to the Aqua Fria River, cross it (if possible) and climb up the mountain to the west or hike back and take a different trail north to the river. Bring water and a snack.

Feb 8 Coyote Canyon, Scottsdale

We will form carpools and drive Loop 101 to Pima Road, north to Dynamite Road, east to 136th Street and north to Granite Mtn TH. We will do a loop using trails Bootlegger, Coyote Canyon and 136th Street Express. The Coyote Canyon trail goes through a slot canyon so should be pretty neat and we may see at rare crested saguaro. I have not done this hike before.

The hike is 6 miles with 500 foot elevation gain and rated moderate. Bring water and a snack.

Feb 15 Desert Mountain Trails, Carefree

Billie Horn has arranged for us to hike in the exclusive far northern area of Scottsdale called Desert Mountain. It is a gated community east and north of Carefree and can only be accessed by invitation. Thanks to Billie for arranging this special treat. We will start out on the Brangus Way trail and then the China Wall loop or the shorter Sunset Summit loop. The distance is approximately 5 to 7 miles and the elevation gain 800 feet. Bring water and a snack.

Feb 22 Mormon Trail to Hidden Valley, Phoenix South Mountain

We will form carpools and drive south on SR 51 to I-10, exit at Washington Street, take 24th Street south of Baseline Road to the trailhead.

This is one of my favorite hikes. It is about 4 miles long with 800 foot climb and rated moderate. Hidden Valley has Fat Man’s Pass, a natural tunnel, a butt scoot and many interesting rock formations. Bring water and a snack.
