There will likely be several water crossings which we usually navigate by stepping stones or boards but there is also a possibility of getting your shoes wet.  We hike into Chalk Canyon to see Petroglyphs\, fossils\, hawk’s nest and metates. We’ll spend some time here looking and snacking. You’ll want to take photos.\nThere are porta potties at the TH and a fee of $5.00 per person to hike spur Cross. Bring your Tonto Pass if you have one. This is an in and out hike.  \nDrive Instructions: Take Cave Creek Rd. into the town of Cave Creek and turn left at Spur Cross Rd. The road will bend a couple of times (right\, then left) but just follow the signs to the TH. Park in the big lot at the end of the road. We’ll meet there and walk in together.

Get peace-of-mind by taking the same map and compass training class provided to search and rescue personnel throughout the state. \nThis fast-paced\, yet comprehensive one-day program will teach you how to navigate in the backcountry. Put your classroom knowledge to the test on our outdoor training course with hands-on activities. \nYou will learn how to: \n\nRead a topographic map\nOrient a map to your surroundings\nFind your location on a map\nConfidently determine your route and direction of travel\nDifferentiate True North\, Magnetic North\, and Grid North\nCompensate for magnetic declination and deviations\nCalculate your pace count\n\n…and many other potentially life-saving skills! \nTuition includes: ​ \n\nMap tool for plotting coordinates and measuring distance\nPace beads for determining your distance traveled\n\nPlease Bring: \n\nCompass with:\n\n-Bezel marking in 2 degree increments​ \n-360 degree bezel markings (not quadrant markings) \n-Folding mirror \n-Baseplate of 3 inches or longer \n-Examples include: Silva Ranger 2.0 or the Suunto MC-2 (USGS model) \n-A good compass such as examples above will last for many years.  Lower quality compasses often have problems out of the               box or break easily with normal use. \n\nPen and paper for notes during classroom session\nAt least one fine-line permanent marker for marking on maps (maps are provided)\nClothing appropriate for expected weather conditions\nSmall backpack with hydration\, snacks\, and any other items you might want with you while outside\n\n​PLEASE NOTE: You must have the physical capacity to walk off-trail\, through varied terrain in a desert environment over a distance of approximately 2 miles for the field activities. Come and see who wins! \n10-11 A.M. \nBirdie Nichols and Lachlan Butler are a dynamic country music duo whose live performances blend heartfelt storytelling with exceptional musicianship. (Y/N) Yes  \nCarpool Time & Location: 7:00 AM  Target in Fountain Hills  about 1 mile before the Hwy 87\, e from the light at Hwy 87   (Beeline)  \nDifficulty (estim): Moderate  \nHike Distance (estim): 8.2 miles  \nHike Time (estim): 5 hrs  \nElevation Chg (approx ft\, optional): 1215′ ft  \nHike Description: This is a scenic hike in the pines following Horton Creek. There are many photo ops along this trail with lots of small waterfalls (if there is water)  The Fall colors should be abundant and maybe wild flowers too. The ascent is gradual.  Bring gas money to pay the drivers and bring a lunch or snack. This will be our longest hike and longest day away from the valley. \nDrive Instructions: From the Target Center\,  We will ask for drivers so please volunteer if you can. We’ll carpool to Payson where we stop for a bathroom break and caravan to the TH from there. If the first lot is full\, there is an overflow lot that will add half a mile to the hike if we park there.\nIf you plan to just meet at the TH pls let us know ahead of time we have instructions to drive there.
