DESCRIPTION:October 17\, 18 and 19\, 2025 \n \nSave Our Mountains Foundation (SOMF) is planning a fun filled three-day Festival in the Mountains at the North Mountain Visitor Center (NMVC) to help raise money in support of our North Mountains Preserve.  There will be live music\, local hikes\, a silent action and drawings\, activities for kids\, dog costume event\, demos\, displays\, exhibits and more.  Phoenix Mountains Preserve Council and Central Arizona Mountain Rescue Association will be represented. \nPlus\, our Market in the Mountains featuring local artists\, authors\, and community vendors. \nFRIDAY\, OCTOBER 17th\, 4 – 7 P.M. \nOPENING CEREMONIES – 4 P.M.\nThe City of Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego is scheduled to attend the first day of the Festival in the Mountains with our District Councilwoman Debra Stark to start off the festivities with a proclamation declaring that day Festival in the Mountains or Save Our Mountains Foundation Day! \nSILENT AUCTION – 4 – 6:30 P.M. \nCloses 6:30 P.M. \nWinners for Friday announced by 7:00 P.M. Do not need to be present to win. \nDOG COSTUME VOTING & WINNER – 4 P.M. – 7 P.M. \nCamp Bow Wow is sponsoring our Dog Costume Contest.  Vote at the festival\, Friday 4 – 7 P.M. and Saturday 9 A.M. – 4 P.M. Winner announced Saturday\, 6:00 P.M. \nHIKE – Mountain View Park Hike – 5 P.M. \nMeet at NMVC.  Hikers will follow trail 100 to Mountain View Park and back.\nWe will pass by the Community Gardens and discuss how the gardens flourish in the Spring and Summer.\nThis hike is 4 miles out and back with little elevation change. This hike is open to everyone. \nStarting in October\, sign-up sheets for the hikes will be available at the NMVC Front Desk. There will be a minimal suggested donation for the hikes. \nOPEN MIC JAM SESSION – 5 – 7 P.M. \nParticipants can sign up to perform two songs (10 min. max). Suggested donation is $5. For an additional donation\, participants can have professional musicians sit in with them to play and/or sing backup. \nSTARGAZING – 6 – 8 P.M. \nJoin Jeff Geyer for a night under the stars. A telescope will be set up for folks to stop by and view stars and planets. Bring the whole family for a close-up view of the wonders of the sky. \nCLOSE – 7 P.M. \n \n

Learn the tale of the Rusty Spider with a visit to the Spider’s now vacant lair. \nThis hike is 4 miles\, 2 hours\, rocky in places with some elevation change\, suggested for 10 years old and over. \nStarting in October\, sign-up sheets for the hikes will be available at the NMVC Front Desk. There will be a minimal suggested donation for the hikes. \nMARKET IN THE MOUNTAINS – 9 A.M. – 7 P.M. \nCommunity artists\, businesses and vendors will be set up in the Education Room to meet the public\, share information about their businesses\, and sell their artwork\, products\, and services.  You will find jewelry\, children’s books\, ornaments\, photography\, paintings\, and more. \nSILENT AUCTION – 9:00 A.M. – 6:30 P.M. \nCloses 6:30 P.M. \nWinners for Saturday announced by 7:00 P.M. Come see who wins! \nSTORY TIME – 11 – 11:30 A.M.\, 12 – 12:30 P.M. & 3 – 3:30 P.M. \nLinda Henley-Smith\, accompanied by Kyle Oty\, will be reading excerpts from her book\, The Adventures of Kyle Oty A Study of Arizona.  The stories teach Arizona’s history\, geography\, and culture in a fun way\, with questions\, crafts\, vocabulary\, and activities to reinforce learning. \nCHILDREN’S HIKE – NOON \nThis hike will be 1 to 3 miles long and will be geared to children. Depending upon the group\, the decision will be made as to the length of the hike. \nSign-up sheet at North Mountain Visitor Center. \nLIVE MUSIC – 1 – 3 P.M. \nThorn and The Rose – Acoustic Folk & Flute with Husband-and-Wife Duo Barbara & Doug Barnett \nDoug Barnett is an award-winning indie songwriter who has produced 13 albums and played in bars\, restaurants\, and special events from Seattle to Route 66 to the greater Phoenix area. His wife Barbara often joins him and together they play originals and cover decades of folk\, pop\, Gospel\, Western\, and country music. \nLIVE MUSIC – 4 – 6 P.M. \nNancy Elliott \n“Hard to believe I have been playing music and performing for 50 years. I started playing organ with my mom. When I got my first guitar\, I was off and running\, playing campfires and pig roasts\, weddings and backyard parties. My older friends would get me into bars so I could sit in with the bands. I played the folk houses in Dayton\, resorts and lodges in Geneva\, and from here to there in California and Texas. Arizona is where I fell in with the Western crowd\, playing the same music\, I had been writing and singing for years. I now have my own little genre called Southwestern Americana. We can do some exploring in either direction with elevation changes (nothing too strenuous). We’ll keep the distance between 4 and 5 miles and 2 to 3 hours. We might see tunnels and/or Petroglyphs and lots of desert scenery. \nSign up at the NMVC. There will be a minimal suggested donation for the hikes. \nMARKET IN THE MOUNTAINS – 9 A.M. – 4 P.M.  \nCommunity artists\, businesses and vendors will be set up to meet the public\, share information about their businesses\, and sell their artwork\, products\, and services.  You will find jewelry\, children’s books\, ornaments\, photography\, paintings\, and more. \nSILENT AUCTION – 9 A.M. – 1:30 P.M. \nCloses 1:30 P.M. \nWinners for Sunday announced by 2:00 P.M. Do not need to be present to win. \nCHILDREN’S ART ACTIVITIES – 9 – 11 A.M. & 12:30 – 3 P.M. \nJoin us for interactive and fun children’s art activities led by the Southwest Society of Botanical Artists.  Kids create and learn through art inspired by nature. \nLIVE MUSIC – 9 – 11 A.M. \nTom Bell \nTom Bell\, an Arizona native and student of Antonio D’Petri\, performs acoustic instrumental world music and is a valued volunteer at the North Mountain Visitor Center. \nSTORYTIME – 11 – 11:30 A.M.  & 12 – 12:30 P.M. \nRodo Sofranac\, will be reading excerpts from his book\, The Red Tail Tale on the Arizona Trail.  Follow Rowan\, a young explorer\, and Rojo the red-tailed hawk across the Arizona Trail\, learning about geology\, wildlife\, plants\, and people.  Additional books available in the Market in the Mountains\, including Polly and the Peaputts. \nLIVE MUSIC – 1 – 3 P.M. \nGeorge & Georgia \n“We are an acoustic duo that started making music together in 2016. We met in Denver\, Colorado when Georgia came into the bourbon bar that George was playing at. From her seat she started singing harmony to every song. Our voices blended naturally. Soon we became a duo. After a short stay in Austin\, Texas during the pandemic\, we moved to Phoenix in June of 2021. We enjoy our harmonies and unique arrangements of songs from different genres and eras.” \nWrap up – 4 P.M. \n \n
