We will choose which route based on the temperature of the day. It should be cooler than the Valley. One is 4 mi. The other is a bit longer so we’ll decide as a group. After a short break at the water (hopefully there’s water)\, we’ll return by the same trail. \nDriving Instructions: from I-17\, take the Black Canyon/Rock Springs exit. Go left to cross over the freeway then turn right and a quick left and follow the curves to the TH.  Restroom here.

Please let me know if you plan to meet at NMVC or Maverick \nApproximate Length in Hours:  3+ drive time both ways = 7 or 8 hrs. \nApproximate Distance in Miles:   5        \nDifficulty:  easy to moderate \nDetails: \nThe hike takes us through a forest of Alligator Junipers and Pinion Pines to a large\, old (est 2\,000 yrs) Juniper which is famous due to the story of the 19 firefighters who were fighting the Doce fire in2013. The 19 were photographed in the tree they were sent to protect and just 12 days later all 19 perished in the fire. \nThere is a nice memorial at the tree so if you’d like to bring a trinket to leave at the memorial you are invited to do so.  \nDriving Instructions: \nFrom I-17\, take exit 262 Prescott for AZ 69 N. 5.5 miles to Fain Rd. (traffic light). Turn left to the Maverick station to meet the group at 8:30ish.  Let us know if you plan on meeting there so we will wait. No services at the TH so pit stop at Maverick.  Bring or buy snacks for a break at the tree.

If you want to carpool from the valley\, contact me 48 hrs. ahead and I will share your # with other driving up. \nMeet Up (when & where): Trail Head at 8 am  \nEstimated Difficulty: moderate 650 \nEstimated Length in Hours: 3 1/2 -4 1/2hrs  \nEstimated Distance in Miles: 7.5 miles  \nDescription: This pleasant trail takes us down Sandy’s Canyon which is a bit steep with rocks to Walnut Canyon floor where we meet the Az Trail.  Here the trail is level for a mile then we head up to Fisher Point Vista gaining over 500 feet in a mile. Through oak\, juniper and ponderosa forest we will catch glimpses of the local mountains.  After a rest basically on top a a petrified sand dunes we return to the canyon floor and see a shallow cave which usually has breezes in it. We return the way we came traveling about 7.5 miles with an elevation change of 650 feet. There is a local rock-climbing area called the Pit a half mile away if folks still have energy to walk there to see more cliffs in the canyon.   \nDriving Instructions:  I-17 N to Exit 339 Lake Mary RD/Morman Lake . Last pit stop at the Circle K on the left. Drive 5.5 miles on Lake Mary Rd and look for the sign – turn left (N) If you go to the Campground (old TH) you have gone too far.
